Washing Kids Cotton So It Outlasts the School Year

One Machine, Four Rulebooks

Plain cotton tees are the forgiving ones; cotton spandex bike shorts and leggings tolerate everything except heat; fleece keeps its plush only below medium; and anything with rhinestones or foil print is a delicates problem wearing a t-shirt costume. Sorting kids laundry by rulebook, not by color alone, is the whole game.

Stain Triage at the Hamper

Grass, marker, spaghetti and mystery playground residue all respond to the same routine: cold rinse the same day, dab of liquid detergent rubbed in, twenty minutes of patience, then the normal wash. Heat sets stains permanently, so nothing goes in the dryer until the stain is confirmed gone — a stain that survives one hot cycle is a resident.

Multipack Rotation

Wash the whole pack together and rotate from the bottom of the drawer, and five tees fade evenly instead of one favorite dying young. Same-color loads keep whites white without bleach — which the printed labels on every piece will thank you for. Zip hoodies before washing so the zipper teeth do not chew the rest of the load.

The Shrink Question, Settled

Cotton blends hold their cut through warm washes; it is the hot dryer that steals a size. If a top comes out shorter, it usually relaxes after one wear — but a garment dried hot weekly will genuinely shrink out of rotation a season early. Buying with the chart and the go-up rule from the sizing guide builds in the margin; low-heat drying keeps it.
