Layering Kids for Recess: Warm at 8am, Fine at Noon

A school day spans a cold walk in, an overheated classroom and a windy recess. Layers that a kid can add and shed alone are the fix.

Three Thin Beats One Thick

A camisole, a tee and a fleece layer trap more warmth than one heavy coat — and unlike the coat, the stack adjusts in ten seconds at the classroom door. The base is a snug camisole or undershirt that stays tucked; the middle is the everyday tee; the top is a zip-up hoodie, because zippers are the one fastening every grade schooler can run without help.

The Stack by Season

Why Zip Beats Pullover for School

A pullover hoodie comes off over the head, takes the shirt collar with it and lands on the playground tarmac. A zip-up opens one-handed, ties around the waist and goes back on without a teacher involved. Save the crewneck sweatshirts for weekends and keep the school hook stocked with zips.

The Base Layer Rules

Base layers only work when they fit close — a loose undershirt bunches at the waistband and rides up by second period. Adjustable camisole straps solve half of this on their own; the other half is buying the true chart size rather than sizing up, which is the one exception to the go-bigger rule in the sizing guide.

Keep the Stack Washable

Layering triples the laundry, which is exactly what multipacks are for: five camisoles means the base layer never runs out midweek. Wash fleece cool and tumble low so the inside stays plush — the full settings are in the cotton care guide.
